Following the feedback I got the other day, I said that there were a few different things that I wanted to look at and research to ensure that I took this project in a direction that could be quite interesting and different than just taking simple photographs of flowers - which in all fairness, has been see many many times before!
I was initially thinking about scanning flowers and such, I do really like this ideas and maybe I could get something different and unusual from doing this, however it isn't really me taking the photographs, as the scanner is pretty much doing everything for me - completely defeating the point of it being a photography project, so I have stuck this idea to the side for now but I am still keeping it in mind for later!
I was thinking a little bit about the significance of flowers, some people buy flowers all year round as they like them, and the love having them around their houses so its pretty normal for them to have them. People also give and receive flowers on special occasions i.e birthdays, illnesses, valentines days - are amongst a few. Flowers are like a status thing, the bigger the bunch of flowers the more amount of money spent.
I have done a little research into some photographers, initially I looked at the work of Robert Mapplethorpe - a photographer that was mentioned to me during the feedback session the other day. I had never head of him up until the point! I searched his name on Google, and I was really taken in and couldn't stop looking at his photographs of flowers. I just love the angles and the different ways that the flowers come into the frame, they are really striking and stand out catching your eye - which I really like!
I was also talking to my sister about different ways I could approach this project and she gave me the name of another photographer, being Karl Blossfeldt. I looked at some of the photographs he has taken of different flowers and was again quite taken in by them, i think this was partly because all of the images are black and white and also the flowers / plants within the images are quite unusual and are all in quite strange shapes! It's like he has tried to find the most extravagant ones possible.
I have not yet done enough research on these two photographers to know enough about them and their work, therefore this is something I am going to do, as well as trying to find some other photographers.
I think that taking the flowers out of their usual environment is something quite interesting, as they are no longer where they should be. This is why I would like to take different flowers and plants into the studio and produce images with them out of their environment, as well as creating a bigger impact as I am able to single them out.
